“Whataboutism” is a tactic where someone deflects criticism by pointing out flaws or wrongdoings of others, often with a “what about” phrase. It’s like saying, “You’re criticizing me for X, but what about Y?” to shift attention away from the original issue. This approach intentionally avoids addressing the main concern.
Example: “You’re saying I shouldn’t litter, but what about all the pollution from big corporations?”
I often observe people attempting to do this in debate. If one points out, for example that Islamic forces are currently on ultra-violent and sadistic forms of ‘jihad’ in 29 different coutries (see list below) where they are commiting war crimes of a similar, sick and twisted nature in each, and active in attempting to undermine, destabalize and corrupt democracies in 71 different countries including the ‘free’ world, i.e. the western secular liberal democracies they say something like, “well what about british colonialism and the inquisitions of the Catholic church?”
So here’s an analogy for you; you are in court charged with rape, murder, kidnapping and torture of multiple victims. Your defence is, “Yes your honor, i did these things and some of it is on video along with me bragging about it and it’s well documented by multiple witnesses, so i don’t deny it but that’s not as bad as what Ghinghis Khan did so not guilty” Obviously that is NOT a valid defence.
“whataboutism” is indeed considered a logical fallacy in debate, specifically a type of tu quoque fallacy. It’s a deflection tactic that attempts to discredit an argument by pointing out hypocrisy or flaws in the opponent’s position, rather than addressing the argument itself. This fallacy avoids the main issue and can hinder constructive discussion.
Meanwhile, as naive nincompoops peer with myopic tunnel vision at Gaza and Judea here is a list of the 29 main countries where Islamists are on violent forms of ‘jihad’ currently. They are commiting war crimes of a similar nature in each, a different scapegoat for each conflict (to avoid taking personal responsibility for their horrific crimes) and with similar rhetoric in each case, all rooted in Islamic theology, ideology, and supremecicst/expansionist, greed and power driven, intollerent, oppresive and regressive goals.
